Title: Microsoft IIS WebDAV 'Propfind' Server Restart Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

WebDAV is an extension of the HTTP protocol and by default installs on Microsoft IIS 5.0. WebDav enables remote users to manage and collaboratively edit files on remote web servers.

Microsoft IIS is subject to a remote restart and possibly denial of service attack. Because WebDAV contains a flaw in the handling of malformed requests, an attacker submitting a valid yet unusually long WebDAV 'PROPFIND' request containing numerous ':' characters, will result in a remote restart of IIS. The server's performance has been reported to be affected by this issue, a denial of service condition may exist however it has not been verified.

If successfully exploited the server will drop all HTTP sessions and not respond until IIS has restarted.

This vulnerability affects all services dependent on IIS's functionality.

Affected Products:

  • Microsoft IIS 5.0
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
