Title: Cisco Catalyst SNMP Empty UDP Packet Denial of Service
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
The Catalyst series switch is a scalable, high performance layers 2 and 3 switch manufactured by Cisco Systems. The Catalyst series ranges in size, and is designed for use in organizations sized from small business to large enterprise.
A problem in the switch firmware makes it possible for remote users to deny service to legitimate users of network resources. The problem occurs in the switch when configured to run with the SNMP service disabled, and the switch has been power cycled.
After disabling the SNMP service, and also after the switch has been power cycled, the switch returns to normal operations, and theorhetically does not listen for traffic on the SNMP port. However, if an empty UDP packet is sent to the switch on port 161, the switch becomes unstable, and ceases operation. The switch will not resume normal operations until it is power cycled.
This problem occurs when the switch has had SNMP disabled, and after it has been power cycled. Booting the switch with SNMP operational, and then disabling SNMP does not expose the switch to this problem.
Affected Products:
- Cisco Catalyst 2900 12.0.0(5.2)XU
