Title: Juniper Networks JUNOS Malformed BGP Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Juniper Networks JUNOS is prone to a remote denial-of-service vulnerability.

This issue arises when the application handles specially crafted BGP packets. According to reports on Juniper mailing lists, BGP peers receiving malformed update traffic from another BGP peer will close unexpectedly and then reestablish sessions. This is commonly referred to as a 'flap' or BGP/OSPF 'interface flapping'.

A remote attacker can exploit this issue to cause a denial of service between synchronized BGP peers.

Juniper has reportedly advised customers of this issue and apparently working on a fix, but this can not be confirmed. We will update this BID as more information emerges.

Versions of JUNOS from 7.3 to 8.4 are reported vulnerable.

NOTE: Multiple sources report that upgrading to JUNOS 8.5R1 or above will solve this issue, but this could not be confirmed at the time of writing.

Affected Products:

  • Juniper Networks JUNOS 7.3
  • Juniper Networks JUNOS 8.4
