Title: SING Log Option Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
SING (Send ICMP Nasty Garbage) is a tool to send ICMP packets, customized with spoofed sources and ICMP codes. It is a replacement for the 'ping' utility.
SING is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability because SING's binary is SUID. When invoked with the '-L' option, SING will log its output to a file. Permissions on the output file are not adequately checked, which can permit arbitrary files to be overwritten.
Exploiting this issue allows local attackers to gain elevated privileges, facilitating the complete compromise of affected computers.
SING 1.1 is vulnerable to this issue; other versions may also be affected.
UPDATE (December 4, 2007): Currently, it is not clear whether the affected binary is installed setuid by default. We will update this BID as more information emerges.
