Title: Miranda IM EXT_YAHOO_CONTACT_ADDED Remote Format String Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Miranda IM is an open-source instant messenger for Windows. It supports many different protocols, including AIM, Gadu-Gadu, IAX, ICQ, IRC, Jabber, MSN, and Yahoo.
The application is prone to a remote format-string vulnerability because it fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before passing it as the format specifier to a formatted-printing function.
Specifically, the issue occurs in the 'ext_yahoo_contact_added' function in the 'yahoo.c' file and can be triggered by supplying a specially crafted 'Y7 Buddy Authorization' packet that contains format specifiers.
To exploit this issue, an attacker must trick a victim to connect to a malicious server either by enticing the user to connect to that server or by redirecting traffic. The attacker could also use different attacks to intercept network connections and change packets during transmission.
Successfully exploiting this issue allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary machine code in the context of the application. Failed attempts may cause denial-of-service conditions.
The issue affects Miranda IM 0.7.1; other versions may also be vulnerable.
Affected Products:
- Miranda Miranda 0.7.1
