Title: NEdit Temporary File Creation Vulnerability

Severity: LOW

Description:

NEdit is the Nirvana editor, a freely availabe text editor included with various implementations of the UNIX Operating system. It provides a graphic front end, and features designed to emulate the functions of text editors for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh Operating Systems.

A problem in the software package could make it possible to launch a symbolic link attack on files owned by another user, appending data and potentially gaining elevated privileges.

When the editor is used to print documents, a file is created in the /tmp file system to store this data. However, the creation of the file in the /tmp directory is done insecurely, making it possible to predict a future file extension.

Upon prediction of this file extension, symbolic links to files can be created to point to a file owned by the nedit user, thus allowing the overwriting of information in the file, and potentially the appending of data. This could result in data corruption, or control by another user depending upon the attributes the file inherits through the symbolic link. The nature of this has not yet been determined.
