Title: Siemens Reliant Unix ppd -T Race Condition Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Reliant Unix is a variant of the UNIX Operating System distributed by Fujitsu-Siemens. Reliant Unix is a scalable UNIX Operating system designed for use on Fujitsu-Siemens servers.

Problems with the ppd program could make it possible for a user with local system access to deny service to other users, and potentially gain elevated privileges. ppd is a program for initiating remote dialup connections to other systems.

ppd creates files in the /tmp directory insecurely. When using the -T flag, ppd creates a file using the extension /tmp/ppd.trace. As the ppd program executes with SUID privileges, this file may be subject to a symbolic link attack. It is possible for a local user to symbolically link any file to this file extension. After execution of ppd.trace, the linked file is overwritten.

Affected Products:

  • Siemens Reliant UNIX 5.43.0
  • Siemens Reliant UNIX 5.44.0
  • Siemens Reliant UNIX 5.45.0
