Title: SCO OpenServer rmail Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

SCO OpenServer 5 ships with several suid bin executables used in printer administration and related tasks.

These components are vulnerable to exploitable buffer overflows.

This includes rmail, a component of the MMDF mail system used to interpret incoming email messages sent via uucp.

rmail fails to properly handle command line arguments. As a result, by submitting excess input to rmail through the command line, it is possible for a local attacker to trigger a buffer overflow. This can cause data copied onto the stack to overwrite critical parts of the stack frame such as the calling function's return address.

Since this data is supplied by the user it can be made to alter the program's flow of execution. If properly exploited, this can yield user 'bin' privilege to the attacker. Such access may lead to futher compromise.
