Title: OpenVMS Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

OpenVMS is a mainframe-like operating system originally developed by Digital. It is maintained and distributed by HP.

OpenVMS is prone to multiple local denial-of-service vulnerabilities:

- A vulnerability affects the '[SYS$LDR]NET$CSMACD.EXE' image. Attackers can exploit this issue by calling the 'MCR MCL SHOW CSMA-CD Port * All' command, which may cause the application to crash and deny service to legitimate users.

- A buffer-overflow vulnerability affects packet-handling mechanisms in the '[SYS$LDR]SYS$EI1000.EXE' and '[SYS$LDR]SYS$EI1000_MON.EXE' images.
This issue arises when the device doesn't have sufficient memory buffers and an oversized packet is received. The driver fails to reject the network packet, allowing attackers to exploit this issue to crash the application and deny service to legitimate users.

This issue affects OpenVMS ALPHA V8.3 and OpenVMS for Integrity Servers V8.3.

Affected Products:

  • HP OpenVMS 8.3 Integrity
  • HP OpenVMS 8.3.Alpha
