Title: Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere Database Engine Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Description:
Symantec Ghost is an application used for enterprise wide remote PC deployment, recovery, cloning, and migration. It enables and administrator to deploy or restore an OS image or application onto a PC and migrate user settings and profiles to customize the PC. The Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere Database Engine that is shipped with Symantec Ghost is susceptible to a buffer overflow attack.
The database engine listens on TCP port 2638 and can be connected to by any remote user possessing no credentials whatsoever. If a malicious user were to connect to port 2638 and enter a character string consisting of approximately 45 kilobytes, Symantec Ghost may crash or arbitrary code could be executed on the target system depending on the data entered. If random data were supplied into the buffer, a denial of service attack would be launched and restarting the application would be required in order to regain normal functionality. If the remote attacker were to craft a specially malformed string and enter it into the buffer, the registers may be overwritten, thereby permitting the possibility of arbitrary code to be executed. This attack may be used to gain full control over the target system and the malicious may perform arbitrary commands.
