Title: Symantec Ghost Configuration Server DoS Attack

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Symantec Ghost is an application used for enterprise wide remote PC deployment, recovery, cloning, and migration. It enables and administrator to deploy or restore an OS image or application onto a PC and migrate user settings and profiles to customize the PC. The configuration server component in Ghost is susceptible to a trivial denial of service which may initiated by a remote attacker.

The configuration server resides on port 1347. A remote attacker may connect to port 1347 without possessing any authorization and enter a buffer comprised of approximately 45 kilobytes. This would cause the application to generate the following error and shut down:

Restarting Ghost would be required in order to regain normal functionality.
