Title: Oracle Application Server ndwfn4.so buffer overflow
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Oracle Application Server integrates with iPlanet Web Server (iWS) to deliver content over the web.
The shared library 'ndwfn4.so' (located in $ORAHOME/ows/4.0/lib) that ships with Oracle Application Server can be configured to respond to a certain set of requests made to iWS. Specifically, requests prefixed by a certain string (normally '/jsp/') are handled by OAS and not iWS.
ndwfn4.so is vulnerable to a buffer overflow. If a prefixed request loner than approximately 2050 characters is made to a vulnerable host, a parser function in ndwfn4.so will undergo a stack overflow.
A specifically crafted request string would allow an attacker to exploit this overflow and execute arbitrary code on the host, albeit as the iWS user. An immediate consequence of this is that remote users are able to take down a running iWS.
Only the Solaris version of OAS is known to be vulnerable. Other UNIX versions are likely vulnerable as well.
Affected Products:
- Oracle Application Server 4.0.8 2
