Title: WatchGuard Firebox II High Malformed Packet Rate Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Firebox II is the firewall solution designed and distributed by Watchguard. Firebox II is designed as an enterprise level firewall with numerous security features and filtering customizations.

A problem with the firewall could lead crashing of the firewall, and denial of service to legitimate users of network resources.

It is reported that a large burst of malformed packets of either TCP or ICMP to a Firebox II firewall leads to crashing of the firewall. However, details of how these packets are malformed are unavailable.

Upon receiving in a short period of time a burst of packets roughly 1 megabit in size, the Firebox II system becomes unstable. Crashdump analysis of such an incident indicate system resources being consumed to the point of causing the system to run out of memory, and after attempting to page to manage the influx of packets, the system overwrites kernel memory and causes a kernel oops.

After the oops occurs, the firewall ceases operation. A power-cycling is needed to restore normal operation of the system.

Affected Products:

  • WatchGuard FireboxII Firmware 4.2.0
  • WatchGuard FireboxII Firmware 4.3.0
  • WatchGuard FireboxII Firmware 4.4.0
