Title: Shareplex Arbitary Local File Disclosure Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Shareplex is a database replication tool from Quest Software.

Versions of the product contain a vulnerability which can permit local users to read arbitrary files with superuser privilege.

A script used in the installation of Shareplex leaves the permissions for several Shareplex components set mode 4555. One of these components, Qview, is used for queue management and other tasks. A feature of Qview, 'cmd', allows its user to specify a file containing Qview commands as input.

Since Qview is setuid root, it can open and read any file on the filesystem. Unfortunately, these capabilities are not limited when unprivileged users run Qview. If a regular user specifies a file with contents inaccessible to that user as the argument to 'cmd', Qview will open this file, and attempt to execute each line.

If the contents of the file are not valid Qview commands, they will be output to standard error as part of error messages. Exploiting this behaviour, an attacker can obtain the contents of normally unreadable, sensitive files
from this error output.

This may lead to a compromise of enhanced privileges.

Affected Products:

  • Quest Software Shareplex 2.1.3.9
  • Quest Software Shareplex 2.2.2 beta
