Title: Alt-N MDaemon IMAP DoS Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

MDaemon is an email server which supports most common internet mail protocols offered by Alt-N Technologies.

Due to a flaw in various IMAP commands, a valid user could cause MDaemon to refuse any new connections to the IMAP service. The commands in question are 'SELECT' and 'EXAMINE'.

'SELECT' is the command used to specify the mailbox a user is attempting to access.

'EXAMINE' enables the user to specify the desired mailbox with read access only.

Once a user has successfully logged into the IMAP service default port 143, submitting either a 'SELECT' or 'EXAMINE' command along with 250 or more characters will cause MDaemon to refuse connection to the service. This issue may be due to a boundary condition error, which could create the possibility of code execution. This theory has not been confirmed.

It should be noted that MDaemon will prompt the attacker with 'NO Mailbox does not exist' error message before refusing the connection.

A restart of the IMAP service is required in order to gain normal functionality.
