Title: SGMLtools Temporary File Permission Vulnerability

Severity: LOW

Description:

SGMLtools was originally written by Cees de Groot. The SGMLtools package is designed to give users a customizable document markup and maintenance interface.

The SGMLtools package is no longer maintained, and has been obsoleted by the SGMLtools Lite Project. This new package is the current focus of the original SGMLtools Development Team.

A problem with SGMLtools could make it possible to corrupt files belonging to other users. While a file is being crafted with the package, files used by the package are created insecurely in the /tmp directory. These /tmp files do not have adequate permissions set to prevent other users from manipulating them. These inadequate permissions make it possible to read the files, with the potential to write or corrupt the files.

A fixed version of the SGMLtools package has been released by vendors. The fix creates a directory in /tmp with secure permissions, and creates the files beneath this secure directory.
