Title: SLRN Long Header Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

slrn is an open source, freely available news reader. it is actively maintained by the SLRN Development Team, distributed through Sourceforge, and included with many distributions of Linux.

slrn has been designed to give users an easy to use, highly configurable, full featured interface to the USENET. This vulnerability involves the code used to wrap and unwrap the headers of posts to the USENET. The problem may make it possible to execute arbitrary code.

Due to insufficient bounds checking by the code storing wrapped data on the stack, a buffer overflow can occur. The buffer allocated for holding wrapped headers may be overflown by a large amount of header information, and can result in the overwriting of heap variables. Code execution can occur through data encoded into the mail, either by way of the header, or the body of the mail.

slrn is not vulnerable to this by default. This vulnerability occurs in systems using the program with the wrapping function enabled. Upon execution of code, this code will inherit the UID and privileges of the slrn process.
