Title: timed Small Packet Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

timed is the time daemon, a software package designed to synchronize the clocks of multiple systems. It synchonizes the clocks of local systems using UDP, keeping log times on network systems consistant.

A problem with the implementation distributed with the FreeBSD version of the UNIX Operating System may result in a Denial of Service to legitimate users of the daemon. The resulting denial of service could allow systems dependent upon the daemon for clock accuracy to create system logs with inconsistant times. This vulnerability also affects Linux systems using the vulnerable timed implementation.

The timed daemon monitors the network, listening for packets on port 525. Upon receiving a request, the daemon services the client, and returns to listen state. The problem occurs in the handling of packets of unexpected size.

In vulnerable implementations, the receipt of a packet by the daemon with a received data size smaller than the expected amount to fill the fields in the tsp struct results in the daemon dying. A check to insure sane operation within the program after receiving such a packet does not exist. After exiting, the daemon will not function until restarted again manually, or through a watchdog process.
