Title: 'libarchive' Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities
Severity: HIGH
Description:
The 'libarchive' library is an interface library for reading and writing streaming archive files (e.g. 'tar' and 'cpio').
The library is prone to multiple vulnerabilities because it fails to properly handle malformed TAR and PAX archives.
The specific issues are as follows:
1. An infinite-loop denial-of-service vulnerability occurs when processing archives with prematurely ending PAX extension headers or when handling corrupted PAX extension headers.
2. A NULL-pointer dereference denial-of-service vulnerability occurs when processing archives that prematurely end within a TAR header immediately following a PAX extension header or when processing corrupted PAX extension headers.
3. A buffer-overflow vulnerability occurs when processing archives containing corrupted PAX extension headers. This issue may allow attackers to corrupt memory and execute arbitrary code.
Successfully exploiting these issues allows remote attackers to trigger application crashes, consume excessive CPU resources, and potentially execute arbitrary machine code in the context of applications that use the affected library.
