Title: Solaris tip Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
tip is a traditional UNIX utility, much like cu. tip is designed to handle full duplex terminal connections to remote hosts. tip is included with Solaris, the Sun Microsystems version of the UNIX Operating System.
A problem with tip could make it possible for a local user to gain elevated privileges. These privileges are limited to an euid of uucp, although it may be possible to gain higher privileges.
The tip program contains a buffer overflow. This overflow is due to the handling of environment variables by the tip program. tip does not sufficiently check the contents of variables prior to inheriting them.
In this vulnerability, it is possible to overflow a buffer holding the $HOME environment variable. By passing a total of 265 bytes through the $HOME environment variable to tip, it is possible to overflow the buffer holding the environment variable, and overwrite stack variables, including the return address.
