Title: Ikonboard Remote File Disclosure Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Ikonboard is a perl-based discussion forum script from ikonboard.com.
Versions of Ikonboard are vulnerable to remote disclosure of arbitrary files.
Ikonboard uses the 'helpon' http variable to construct a filename when opening help-files. This value is used in the filename, followed by the file extension '.dat'.
An attacker can specify an arbitrary file to open and display using this variable. The script does not filter the supplied filename for null bytes, which are not used by perl but are employed by the system calls.
If an attacker supplies a null byte in the 'helpon' variable, the system will ignore anything following it when the file is being opened. As a result, an attacker can remove the '.dat' extension that is added to the filename when the variable is constructed.
By using '../' character sequences to traverse to the desired directory, an attacker can open an arbitrary file on the filesystem. The contents of the file will then be disclosed to the user after it has been opened.
This vulnerability extends to any files readable by the webserver process, which could include potentially sensitive system files (ie /etc/passwd).
This could include sensitive system information, including account information and passwords for Ikonboard users and administrators
Properly exploited, such information could permit an attacker to further compromise security of the affected host.
