Title: Microsoft IE Telnet Client File Overwrite Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
The Telnet client that ships with services for Unix 2.0 contains a client side logging function which is used to log all telnet session data to a file specified by this option. By specifying the "-f" flag to the telnet command, all session text is logged in a specified file. When initiating the telnet client, the logging function can be set as a command line argument.
A vulnerability exists that could enable a remote user to invoke the telnet client and execute arbitrary commands on a target machine via IE. This is achieved by crafting a URL composed of command line parameters to the telnet client, which would invoke 'telnet.exe'.
Submitting the URL 'telnet:-f%20\filename%20host' will cause IE to connect to the host and initiate the logging of all session information exchanged to the specified file. It is possible for an attacker to write arbitrary data to this file which may be executed later. This vulnerability is also achieved via malicious HTML messages which can be sent in an email.
It should be noted that if the attacker has knowledge of the username, this attack can be directed specifically to that user who will have the appropriate permissions to create the file in question.
