Title: BitchX Hook.C Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
BitchX is a freely available, open-source IRC client. It is available for UNIX, Linux, and other UNIX-like operating systems.
BitchX is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to bounds-check user-supplied date before copying it into an insufficiently sized buffer. Specifically, the application fails to check the size of data structures before copying them into a hash table. This issue resides in the 'hook.c' file.
An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code within the context of the affected application. Failed exploit attempts will result in a denial-of-service condition.
This issue affects BitchX 1.1-final; other versions may also be affected.
Affected Products:
- BitchX IRC Client 1.1 -final
- Slackware Linux -current
