Title: Microsoft IE Temporary Internet Files Folder Disclosure Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

It is possible for an attacker to determine the path of the temporary internet files folder on a remote machine. Obtaining this information will assist in the exploitation of an existing vulnerability (Bid 1033), as well as others which together enable an attacker to execute any program on a target machine with local user privileges.

This path information is obtained if an attacker embeds malicious HTML code in either a web page or an email. 'http://target/chmtemp.html' could reveal a path to a temporary internet files folder, where target is a web server or alias of a remote host that the file 'chmtemp.html' does not reside on. The malicious code utilizes the the 'document.url' function to reveal the path to the temporary internet files folder.

Once the path is known, any contents in that folder can be referenced by a remote site or via email. The contents, being called from the local drive, will be treated as trusted content even though they originate from remote sources.

*Update*: There have been reports that it is still possible to exploit this vulnerability on patched versions of IE, if html file attachments to email or news messages are opened. The new exploit again opens the possibility to execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable system.
