Title: Microsoft Exchange 2000 / IIS 5.0 Multiple Invalid URL Request DoS Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Microsoft Exchange 2000 enables users to access their inboxes and other various resources located in the Web Storage System. Remote access to these resources is done via a URL.
Due to a flaw in the code which handles web client requests, it is possible for a remote user to cause a denial of service in Exchange. If an authenticated user requests a specially crafted URL of a specific length multiple times to the host running Exchange, the web based mail service could stop responding. Local email clients are not affected by this vulnerability.
This problem in Exchange is caused by a memory allocation error, which leads to an access violation error when repeated multiple times.
It should be noted that this vulnerability, if successfully exploited, will only affect service for web based email clients.
A restart of the service is required in order to gain normal functionality.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could assist in further attacks against the victim host.
UPDATE: IIS 5.0 suffers from a similar issue with similar consequences.
Affected Products:
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2000
