Title: Centrinity FirstClass Local User Mail Spoofing Vulnerability

Severity: LOW

Description:

FirstClass is a small to mid-range intergrated software package designed to handle multiple message formats, including fax, email, and voice mail. It is distributed and maintained by Centrinity.

A problem with the package may allow a remote user to launch a social engineering attack against local users of the software. This is due to the ability of a remote user to connect to the local SMTP server and send mail with shorthand addresses, preceeding the @.

Under normal circumstances, mail sent by manually connnecting to the smtp server will be either discarded by the server, or the topic of the mail will be pre-appended with the text "Spam:". However, by connecting to the mail server manually, and sending a mail using "MAIL FROM:" and the shorthand name "ADMIN" inside angle-brackets, this mail is passed along without further incident to the local user. The contents of this mail are solely at the discretion of the sender.

This problem is not restricted solely to FirstClass, and may appear in other Mail Transport Agents which allow remote users to connect to the mail server and send mail as local users. The validity of such mail may be authenticated by the SMTP headers.

Affected Products:

  • Centrinity FirstClass 5.50.0
