Title: Apple Mac OS X mDNSResponder Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Apple Mac OS X's mDNSResponder service is prone to a remote buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to properly bounds-check user-supplied input before copying it to an insufficiently sized memory buffer.
The issue resides in the UPnP IGD (Internet Gateway Device Standardized Device Control Protocol) code used to create port mappings on home NAT (Network Address Translation) gateways in the OS X mDNSResponder implementation. A remote attacker may exploit this issue by submitting maliciously crafted packets to victims.
The affected service is automatically restarted if it crashes, giving attackers multiple chances to exploit this issue to execute code.
Successfully exploiting this issue allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary machine code with superuser privileges, facilitating the complete compromise of affected computers. Failed exploit attempts likely result in a denial-of-service condition.
Apple Mac OS X 10.4.0 through 10.4.9 are vulnerable to this issue.
This issue was originally included in BID 24144 (Apple Mac OS X 2007-005 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities), but has been split into its own record.
The vendor reports this issue also affects Apple TV versions prior to 1.1.
