Title: Atrium Software Mercur Mail Server 3.3 EXPN Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Atrium Software Mercur Mail Server is a Windows based SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 server designed for intranet or internet email exchange.
The SMTP component (MCRSMTP.EXE) contains an unchecked buffer that handles the EXPN command.
EXPN (Expand) is a SMTP command used to identify a mailing list and display its membership credentials.
A remote attacker may crash a remote host on which Mercur Mail Server resides by establishing a telnet connection to the SMTP Server and entering an overly long string of random data following the EXPN command.
If a specially crafted string was supplied instead that overwrote the EIP, the remote attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the LocalSystem account (Mercur Mail Server is run with LocalSystem account privileges). This would yield the remote attacker the ability to perform any action that is permissible under the LocalSystem context.
A malicious user would be able to exploit this vulnerability without proper credentials or authorization.
