Title: Palm Desktop Password Bypass Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

The Palm Pilot personal digital assistant includes a tool called Palm Desktop to extend the Palm interface to the user's PC. It connects the Palm device to the PC through the serial port via the unit's hotsync cradle. This allows PC access to Palm databases including the calendar, to-do lists, phone books, and notepad. This access is normally protected by a password which prevents an unauthorized user of the PC from accessing private data.

Version 4.0 of the Palm Desktop software permit an unauthorized user to access password-protected Palm databases.

Upon being prompted for the password, keyboard shortcuts [alt]-F or [alt]-H activate the program's drop-down menus.

By opening the Tools | Options | Security tab, the user may uncheck the "require password" field to disable password protection.

Following a restart of the Desktop software, any local user may read or write protected Palm databases.
