Title: Mailnews.cgi Username Remote Shell Commands Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

mailnews is a CGI script for maintaining mailing lists.

mailnews contains a security vulnerability that may result in an attacker gaining access to the server on which it runs.

A form variable in the administration interface is passed to the shell insecurely. It is not checked for shell metacharacters. As a result, if a username containing these character sequences is submitted, they will be
acted upon by the shell. An attacker could execute arbitrary commands by embedding them into the username field after characters such as ';' or '|'. These commands would be executed with the privileges of the webserver process.

Exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to a remote attacker gaining local access to the underlying host.
