Title: McAfee Viruscan GetUserRegisteredForBackend McSubMgr.DLL ActiveX Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
McAfee VirusScan is an enterprise antivirus application that offers protection against the latest computer virus threats.
The 'McSubMgr.DLL' ActiveX control shipped with McAfee VirusScan is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability. Specifically, the control with a CLSID of '9BE8D7B2-329C-442A-A4AC-ABA9D7572602' fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input to the 'GetUserRegisteredForBackend' method in the 'MCSUBMGR.DLL' ActiveX component. By passing an inordinately long string as input to the affected method, an attacker can trigger a stack-based buffer overflow.
Invoking the object from a malicious website or HTML email may trigger this condition. A successful attack would corrupt process memory, allowing arbitrary code to run in the context of the client application using the affected ActiveX control.
McAfee Virus Scan 10.0.21 uses this vulnerable ActiveX control; other versions may also be affected.
Affected Products:
- McAfee SecurityCenter 4.3
- McAfee SecurityCenter 6.0
- McAfee SecurityCenter 6.0.22
