Title: NetManage Chameleon SMTP Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Chameleon is a suite of Internet services offered by NetManage.
The SMTP server shipped with Chameleon contains a buffer overflow vulnerability that may be remotely exploitable. This vulnerability is in the argument to the HELP command.
If the argument is over 500 bytes in length, an unsafe buffer copy will cause this excessive data to overwrite critical memory. When this occurs, the service will crash, causing a denial of SMTP service. Since this is a buffer overflow condition, it may be possible for an attacker to execute arbitrary instructions if the right data can be overwritten.
An exploitation of this type would provide the attacker with full access to the underlying system.
Affected Products:
- NetManage Chameleon Unix 97
- NetManage Chameleon 4.5.0
