Title: Analog ALIAS Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Analog is a freely available log analysis tool that provides advanced features. It was originally written by Stephen Turner.

Analog provides network statistics through a web interface, and can be configured to use a CGI infrastructure that will permit the querying of various statistics. The interface makes use of FORM methods, which are passed to the analog program. A problem with the analog program, in combination with the CGI, may make it possible for a use to remotely execute arbitrary code. The CGI program insuffiently checks input, which under some circumstances could result in the passing of an excessively long ALIAS command to analog.

By sending an excessivly long string through the ALIAS command, it is possible to overflow a memory buffer in the analog program, overwriting memory addresses and variable within the stack, and potentially the return address of the program, thus allowing a remote user to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the httpd process.

Affected Products:

  • Stephen Turner Analog 4.15.0
  • Stephen Turner Analog 4.90.0beta2
