Title: Chili!Soft ASP GID Root Script Execution Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

ChiliSoft ASP (CASP) is a cross-platform Active Server Pages implementation for Linux and other platforms including Lotus Domino, Apache, HP-UX, AIX and others.

CASP has a security called 'inherited mode', which causes the service to run with whatever group and user id's that are specified in the webserver's virtual host configuration files.

Unfortunately, the implementation of this security mode is flawed. CASP fails to set the proper groupid when the script runs. As a result, any ASP script that is executed by CASP in this security mode will run with groupid root (what the CASP daemon runs with).

A local user could write a malicious script and, if the CASP daemon's 'inherited' mode is enabled, the script may be remotely executed, potentially running arbitrary commands with group root privileges.

This could lead to an elevation of privileges for the creator of the script.

Affected Products:

  • Chilisoft ChiliSoft ASP for Linux 3.0.0
  • Chilisoft ChiliSoft ASP for Linux 3.5.0
