Title: Microsoft Windows CSRSS CSRFinalizeContext Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Microsoft Windows CSRSS (client/server run-time subsystem) is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem. CSRSS is a required service for Windows and is always running.
CSRSS is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability becaue it fails to adequately marshal system resources when handling connections during process startups and stops.
Specifically, this vulnerability resides in the 'CSRSRV.DLL' library because it assumes processes will make only one 'ApiPort' connection. Connection counters are not incremented on new ALPC 'ApiPort' connections, but can be decremented when connections are closed. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to corrupt the client process structure, gain control of memory, and execute arbitrary code.
Successful attacks will result in the complete compromise of affected computers.
