Title: MIT Kerberos 5 Telnet Daemon Authentication Bypass Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
MIT Kerberos 5 is a suite of applications and libraries designed to implement the Kerberos network-authentication protocol. It is freely available and operates on numerous platforms.
MIT Kerberos 5 is prone to an authentication-bypass vulnerability because it fails to handle specially crafted usernames beginning with '-e'. The application interprets '-e' as a login.krb5 command-line flag, which is executed by telnetd. This will cause login.krb5 to execute a portion of the BSD rlogin protocol with an arbitrary username. An attacker may then gain access to affected computers without requiring a password.
An attacker can exploit this issue to gain superuser or SYSTEM-level privileges on the affected computer. Successfully exploiting this issue will result in the complete compromise of affected computers.
This issue occurs in Kerberos 5 versions 1.6 and prior.
