Title: PHP Hash Table Overwrite Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

PHP is a general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.

PHP is prone to an arbitrary-code-execution vulnerability. This issue occurs because the session extension fails to set a proper value for the reference count for session variables. By unsetting the '_SESSION' and 'HTTP_SESSION_VARS' global variables, an attacker can destroy PHP's internal hash table and replace it with a string containing malicious code.

Presumably, remote attacks are also possible, even though this vulnerability is described as exploitable by local users.

The attacker may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code within the context of the affected webserver.

This issue affects PHP 4 (prior to 4.4.5) and PHP 5 (prior to 5.2.1).
