Title: Microsoft Windows Speech Components Voice Recognition Command Execution Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Microsoft Windows is prone to a command-execution vulnerability because of its Speech Components (sapi.dll) built-in voice-recognition capability.
When voice recognition is enabled, and when the speakers and microphone are on and the volume is adjusted appropriately, voice commands given via an audio file may be executed by the operating system. The recognition software will recognize audio originating from the computer's own audio output.
An attacker can exploit this issue by enticing an unsuspecting user to play an audio file containing arbitrary commands. Note that privileged functions in this manner will prompt for Administrator credentials before executing.
A successful attack could delete files or shut down the computer; other attacks are also possible.
NOTE: Given the nature of this vulnerability, victim users will notice exactly what is occurring as it happens.
