Title: Computer Associates BrightStor ARCServe BackUp LGServer Remote Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup products provide backup and restore protection for Windows, NetWare, Linux, and UNIX servers as well as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, UNIX, AS/400, and VMS clients.
BrightStor ARCServe BackUp is prone to a remote stack-based buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to properly bounds-check user-supplied data before copying it to an insufficiently sized buffer. This issue affects the handling of TCP requests over TCP port 1900 by the Mobile Backup Service process (LGSERVER.EXE).
Specifically, packets containing a ten-character length specifier of '0000032767' followed by malicious data designed to leverage the issue will cause stack memory to be overwritten. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM-level privileges.
A successful attack can result in the complete compromise of affected computers. Failed attempts will likely cause denial-of-service conditions.
Note that only applications on the Windows operating system are affected.
