Title: Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup LGSERVER.EXE Denial Of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup products provide backup and restore protection for Windows, NetWare, Linux, and UNIX servers as well as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, UNIX, AS/400, and VMS clients.

The application is prone to a denial-of-service vulnerability because it mishandles unexpected user-supplied input.

Specifically, the vulnerability resides in the 'LGSERVER.EXE' service. An attacker may exploit this issue by attempting to authenticate to the affected service, manipulating the third negotiation packet at address 0x15 - 0x18 (DWORD) to include the '0xff 0xff 0xff 0x7f' (DWORD) value. This causes the service to stop responding while writing a '.USX' file unusually large to 'D:\CA_BABLDdata\Server\data\transfer' containing 2,096,153KB (2GB) NULL bytes. This file will have the format 'RWXXX.usx' where X is 0-9 or A-F.

A remote attacker may exploit this issue to cause the affected service to stop responding or to exhaust available file-storage resources over time, resulting in denial-of-service conditions.
