Title: Citrix Presentation and MetaFrame Server Cpprov.DLL Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

The Citrix Presentation Server and MetaFrame server are ICA client applications that include Citrix support.

The applications are prone to a stack-based buffer-overflow vulnerability because they fail to properly bounds-check user-supplied data before copying it into an insufficiently sized memory buffer.

Specifically, the vulnerability resides in the 'EnumPrinters()' and 'OpenPrinter' functions in the 'ccprov.dll' dynamic link library. If an attacker passes an excessively large string containing 130 or more characters as an argument, memory will be overwritten and become corrupted as a result of a stack-based buffer overflow.

An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code within the context of the Spooler service. The Spooler service typically runs with the privileges of the 'LocalSystem' account.

Note that the vulnerable interface is not externally available by default.

Affected Products:

  • Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0.0
  • Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0.0
  • Citrix Presentation Server 4.0.0
