Title: Cisco IOS IPv6 Source Routing Remote Memory Corruption Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Cisco IOS is prone to a remote memory-corruption vulnerability because the software fails to properly handle malformed IPv6 source-routing headers.

This issue is triggered when IPv6 packets containing specially crafted Type 0 routing headers are processed by affected routers. These headers are used to detail source-routing; processing of these headers is enabled by routers when IPv6 is enabled. Type 2 routing headers, used with Mobile IPv6 implementations, are not affected by this issue.

Due to the nature of affected packets, the IP source address may be spoofed, potentially aiding attackers in obfuscating the source of attacks or in bypassing network ACLs.

The destination address of malicious packets must be one of the addresses defined on the targeted router. This includes global, loopback, or link-local addresses.

Successfully exploiting this issue allows remote attackers to corrupt the memory of affected devices. This may potentially facilitate the execution of attacker-supplied machine code. Failed exploit attempts will likely crash IOS-based devices.

This issue is being tracked by Cisco Bug IDs CSCsd40334 and CSCsd58381.
