Title: Outpost Firewall PRO Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Outpost Firewall PRO is a firewall application implemented for the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Outpost Firewall PRO is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability because it fails to perform adequate SSDT (System Service Descriptor Table) hooking on files in its installation directory. Calls made to the native API 'ZwSetInformationFile' class 'FileLinkInformation' can be used to overwrite arbitrary files within the installation directory. Note that a file overwrite cannot occur on a file that is in use at the time of replacement.
An attacker could exploit this issue by overwriting a driver file, such as 'SandBox.sys', with a file containing malicious machine code. When the computer restarts and the driver runs, the attacker's code would then run with SYSTEM-level privileges.
A successful exploit could allow a local attacker to elevate their privileges, which can lead to the complete compromise of an affected computer.
Outpost Firewall PRO 4.0 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.
