Title: CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup Message Engine/Tape Engine Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup products provide backup and restore protection for Windows, NetWare, Linux, and UNIX servers as well as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, UNIX, AS/400, and VMS clients.
Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup is affected by a remote buffer-overflow vulnerability because the application fails to perform proper bounds-checking on data supplied to the application.
The vulnerability resides in the application's message engine. Specifically, an attacker may exploit buffer-overflow vulnerabilities in the handling of user-supplied data via RPC by issuing requests on TCP ports 6503 and 6504.
The Message Engine RPC service is known to run under the 'dc246bf0-7a7a-11ce-9f88-00805fe43838' and '506b1890-14c8-11d1-bbc3-00805fa6962e' unique user IDs (UUIDs). The Tape Engine RPC service is known to run under the '2b93df0-8b02-11ce-876c-00805f842837' unique user IDs. The services are exposed to this vulnerability when handling RPC opnums '0x2F' and '0x75' in the Message Engine service and opnum '0xCF' in the Tape Engine service.
A remote attacker may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable computer with SYSTEM privileges. Failed exploit attempts may cause denial-of-service conditions. Successful exploits can lead to a complete compromise of affected computers.
This issue affects multiple BrightStor ARCserve Backup application agents and the base product.
