Title: Multiple Vendor ps(1) Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

The ps utility shipped with Sun Solaris and SGI IRIX systems is prone to a locally exploitable buffer overflow condition. The ps utility is typically installed in the /sbin/ folder and in some cases may be a setuid root utility.

This issue is due to insufficient bounds checking of arguments in command line options. An attacker may invoke the utility with malformed arguments, causing sensitive regions of memory to be corrupted with attacker-supplied data. This may allow an attacker to cause arbitrary code to be executed.

This utility calls the procprivl(SETPRV,pm_work(P_MACREAD) function which may be used to count, add, remove or put privileges associated with the calling process. Due to the use of this function, it may be possible to exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.
