Title: Secure Locate Local Information Disclosure Vulnerability
Severity: LOW
Description:
The Secure Locate program ('slocate') is available for various UNIX and Linux operating systems. It is designed after the 'locate' utility, but adds extra features such as permissions checking while viewing database results.
The application is prone to a local information-disclosure vulnerability because the utility fails to properly interpret filesystem permissions.
Specifically, the application fails to properly enforce read privileges for directories. A local user with no read access to a directory cannot read the names of files contained in it. The slocate utility will improperly return the names of files in these directories when its database is searched.
Successfully exploiting this issue allows attackers to gain access to the names of files located in directories they do not have permissions to access. Information that attackers harvest may aid them in further attacks.
Secure Locate 3.1 is vulnerable to this issue; other versions may also be affected.
