Title: Apple DiskManagement Framework BOM Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Apple Diskmanagement framework is the back-end for the 'diskutil' tool used to perform disk/file system maintenance.
The application is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability. This issue occurs when handling specially crafted Bill Of Material (BOM) files. Specifically, an attacker can create BOM file declaring new permissions for specific filesystem locations. When 'diskutil' runs repair operations on the affected BOM file, elevated permissions will be set on the affected filesystem.
A successful exploit would allow a local attacker to execute arbitrary code with superuser privileges, leading to the complete compromise of affected computers. Failed exploit attempts will result in a denial-of-service condition.
This issue affects DiskManagement 92.29 and Mac OS X 10.4.8; prior versions may also be affected.
Affected Products:
- Apple Mac OS X 10.4.8
- Apple Mac OS X Server 10.4.8
