Title: HP-UX stm Race Condition Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
stm is the Support Tools Manager, a program distributed with HP-UX. A problem exists which may make it possible for a user to gain elevated privileges.
The problem occurs in the creation of files by the stm in the directory /var/log/stm. All files created by stm inherit permissions of 0666, with the directory /var/log/stm world accessible by default. It is possible to exploit this problem by brute force guessing what files will be created, and symbolically linking files writable by the user that will be executing stm. This flaw makes it possible for a user with malicious intent to append to, overwrite, or potentially gain elevated privileges on a system vulnerable to this problem.
