Title: Apple Remote Desktop Insecure Default Package Permission Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Apple Remote Desktop is a commercially available package designed to allow administrators to remotely configure and control Apple computers.

Apple Remote Desktop is prone to an insecure-default-permissions vulnerability.

The server application contains built-in packages used to distribute and upgrade the Remote Desktop client software on client computers. The vulnerability presents itself in the default permissions of these packages. Attackers with local access to the server computer may modify the contents of the packages to include arbitrary commands and executable content that will be distributed and executed with superuser privileges on client computers.

Successfully exploiting this issue allows attackers to alter the contents of packages that may subsequently be installed on remote computers. This facilitates the complete compromise of remote computers controlled by the vulnerable Remote Desktop server computer.

Affected Products:

  • Apple Remote Desktop 3.0
