Title: Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 Remote .lnk/.url Vulnerability

Severity: LOW

Description:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 (and prior versions) for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 can be used by hostile web site operators to run arbitrary commands on a victim's machine. This is accomplished by first creating a .lnk or .url shortcut file that refers to a known command - typically a default windows installation program, such as c:\windows\command\deltree.exe. After this file has been created, the hostile web operator can store it on a web server, then provide a hyperlink to it on a web page. Any user running an affected version of Internet Explorer who clicks on such a link will execute the command referred to by the shortcut file LOCALLY. This is done transparently - without any user warning dialogue. Consequences of clicking on such a link could include system damage, data loss, trojan horse or virus implantation, etc.

Affected Products:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.0 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.1 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.1 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
